Adnan Syed, whose murder conviction was overturned last year after he spent nearly two decades in prison, was released from custody on Tuesday.

Syed, who is now 36, was convicted in 2000 of killing his former girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, and was sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years.

But his case gained national attention in 2014 after it was featured on the popular podcast “Serial.”

A judge overturned Syed’s conviction last year and granted him a new trial.

But in March, prosecutors announced they would not retry Syed, clearing the way for his release.

Syed left prison Tuesday morning and was greeted by his family, including his mother, father and brother. He did not speak to reporters as he left.

It’s not clear what Syed will do now that he is out of prison. But his lawyer, Justin Brown, said Syed is “eager to get back to his life as a free man.”

“We all believe that justice was done today,” Brown said. “Adnan Syed is innocent. He has always been innocent.”

Syed’s case is not over yet. The Maryland Attorney General’s Office has until June to decide whether to appeal the judge’s decision to grant Syed a new trial.

But even if the office decides to appeal, Syed will remain free on bail until the case is resolved.
