Patagonia’s billionaire owner, Yvon Chouinard, has given away his company to fight the climate crisis.

In an emotional video released on Thursday, Chouinard said he was donating Patagonia to a new foundation that would focus on environmental causes.

“I want to leave this planet in better shape than when I found it,” Chouinard said. “That’s always been my goal.”

Chouinard said he was inspired to take action on climate change after seeing the destruction caused by wildfires in California last year.

“I just couldn’t sit back and do nothing,” he said.

Chouinard said the foundation would work to “defend the planet and help people in need.”

He added that he hoped other companies would follow his lead and put their profits towards saving the planet.

“It’s time for all of us to stand up and do something,” Chouinard said. “It’s time to take action.”
