It was the first time since 1998 that Williams had lost in the third round of a Grand Slam tournament.

Tomljanović, who is ranked 60th in the world, had never before beaten a top-10 player.

It was also a surprising result given that Tomljanović had lost all three of her previous matches against Williams.

In the match, Tomljanović was able to take advantage of Williams' unforced errors.

The victory was all the more impressive because it was just the fourth time Tomljanović had beaten a top-10 opponent and the first time she'd ever beaten Williams.
