Starr's death was confirmed by Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, the law firm at which he was a partner.

" Ken Starr was an outstanding lawyer and public servant who devoted his life to the rule of law," the firm said in a statement.

Starr served as independent counsel from 1994 to 1999 during the Whitewater investigation into then-President Bill Clinton's real estate dealings.

The investigation led to Clinton's impeachment in 1998 by the House of Representatives on charges of perjury and obstruction of justice.

Clinton was acquitted by the Senate in 1999.

Starr also served as a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit from 1983 to 1989, and as solicitor general of the United States from 1989 to 1993.

In recent years, Starr had been critical of President Donald Trump, calling him "a toxic mix of Roy Cohn meets P.T. Barnum."
