Musk has been embroiled in several controversies over the past year, which may have dissuaded him from going through with the purchase.

In September 2018, he was accused of fraud after falsely claiming that he had secured funding to take Tesla private.

He was also accused of defamation after calling a British cave rescuer a "pedo guy."

Most recently, Musk was sued by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for allegedly misleading investors with his tweets.

The SEC accused Musk of securities fraud and sought to bar him from serving as an officer or director of a public company.

Musk has denied all of the allegations against him and has said that he is innocent.

He has also said that he is not interested in selling Tesla or SpaceX.
